For the Many, Not the Few.

A grassroots movement demanding community-connected leadership at Naenae College, Lower Hutt.

Our Mission

The NNC Tokelau Alliance is a grassroots campaign organized by the Naenae College Union. We believe in empowering every student's voice and ensuring that our college serves the interests of the entire Lower Hutt community, not just a disconnected elite.

We stand for transparency, community connection, and authentic representation. Our leaders should understand the struggles of Lower Hutt families because they live them, not observe them from the outside.

Every student deserves leaders who know their neighborhood, share their challenges, and are accountable to the community they serve.

The Leadership Disconnect Crisis

All Tier 2 Naenae College Senior Leadership elites live outside Lower Hutt. They don't walk our streets, shop at our stores, or understand our community's daily reality.

1

Outsider Leadership

The entire Tier 2 Senior Leadership team commutes from outside Lower Hutt. They arrive by car, make decisions affecting our lives, then leave. They have no stake in our community's future.

2

Lost Connection

As the Mazengarb Report documented: "Teachers have difficulty finding accommodation in the district from which their pupils come." This creates a devastating knowledge gap about students' real lives and struggles.

3

Radical Subversion

These outside elites are attempting to radically subvert Naenae College's mission and connection to the Lower Hutt community. They push agendas that don't reflect our values or needs.

4

Broken Trust

The intimate knowledge that once came from "sharing the same environment as the child" is gone. Without this connection, how can leadership understand the tensions of students' lives or diagnose their needs?

"Earlier the teacher lived in, and was part of, the community and so knew something of local conditions and the tensions of his pupils' lives. This gave him a more intimate knowledge and sympathetic understanding of a child's difficulties... [Now] teachers have difficulty in finding accommodation in the district from which their pupils come... As a result the knowledge that once came to a teacher from sharing the same environment as the child has now to be acquired in some other way."

Voices from Our Community

Real stories from Lower Hutt students, parents, and teachers who understand what's at stake. These voices fuel our movement.

They Don't Know Us

"How can leadership make good decisions for NaeNae students when they've never lived here? They don't know what it's like to take the bus home at night or worry about whether the local center is safe. The Alliance fights for leaders who actually understand our lives."

- Year 12 Student

A Former Teacher's Concern

"The disconnect between current leadership and the community is alarming. The students deserve leaders who genuinely care about this area's future, not people treating it as a career stepping stone before moving on."

- Former Teacher

Parent Perspective

"As a parent who grew up in Lower Hutt and chose to raise my family here, it's frustrating to see school leadership that has no connection to our community making decisions that affect our children's futures. We need people invested in Lower Hutt, not just professionally, but personally."

- Parent

Community Organizer

"I've worked with youth in Lower Hutt for over a decade. The erosion of community connection in our schools mirrors broader issues, leaders parachuting in, making changes, then leaving. The NNC Tokelau Alliance represents young people standing up and saying: our community matters, and we deserve authentic representation."

Our Five Demands

Concrete changes to restore community connection and authentic representation at Naenae College.

1 Community Residency Requirement

All Tier 2 Senior Leadership positions must be filled by individuals who reside in Lower Hutt or commit to relocating within 6 months of appointment. Leadership should share the same community as the students they serve.

2 Transparent Community Accountability

Quarterly town halls where senior leadership must answer directly to students, parents, and community members about decisions affecting Naenae College. No more decisions made behind closed doors by outsiders.

3 Student Voice on All Major Decisions

Mandatory student representative inclusion in all policy decisions, budget allocations, and strategic planning. Our voices must be heard before decisions are made, not after.

4 End Radical Subversion

Halt all top-down initiatives that don't reflect Lower Hutt community values and student needs. Any major changes must have demonstrated community support through consultation and voting.

5 Prioritize Local Hiring

Preference in hiring for candidates with demonstrated commitment to Lower Hutt, whether through residency, community involvement, or family ties. Our school should be a pathway for local talent, not a career stop for outsiders.

These demands are non-negotiable. Our community deserves authentic representation.
